surf

tofino is one of the best surf destinations in canada. cox bay and chesterman beach offer consistent breaks for all levels — beginners can book a lesson with one of the local surf schools, and experienced surfers will find plenty to work with year-round. the water is cold, the wetsuit is non-negotiable, and it's worth every minute.

walk the beaches

pacific rim national park reserve stretches along the coastline with some of the most dramatic beach walking in bc. long beach is the most accessible — wide, wild, and stunning at any tide. inkwell beach and schooner cove are quieter if you want to get away from the crowds.

explore the rainforest

tofino's old-growth forests are something else entirely. the rainforest trail and tonquin trail both offer easy access to ancient cedar and hemlock. if you want to go deeper, the meares island big tree trail takes you through one of the largest stands of old-growth left on vancouver island.

go whale watching

grey whales migrate through clayoquot sound spring through fall, and humpbacks and orcas make appearances too. local operators run tours out of the harbour — it's one of the more genuinely awe-inspiring things you can do on the coast.

eat at the bear bierhaus

end the day at tofino's only west coast bierhaus. chef josh kelly's kitchen turns out bold, seasonally driven plates — the kind of food that earns a proper night out after a day on the water. a curated beer list, hand-crafted cocktails, and a room built for sharing.
